Michael Stephenson is the founder and Chief Legal Counsel at Bay Area Bicycle Law (BABL), the only Northern California-based firm specializing exclusively in bicycle law. Established in 2010, BABL is dedicated to representing cyclists throughout Northern California.
Michael began his legal career in 2007 as a public defender in Oregon, trying misdemeanor cases. He later joined Davis Wright Tremaine’s Portland office, representing high-profile clients. In 2010, he returned to San Francisco to focus exclusively on advocating for cyclists.
An avid cyclist himself, Michael’s expertise in bicycle law has led to significant legal victories, including raising awareness about “doorings” involving rideshare services like Uber. He emphasizes the importance of holding companies accountable for passenger safety and has advocated for better training to prevent such incidents.
Michael earned his law degree from the University of Oregon School of Law, graduating with honors and serving as Managing Editor of the Law Review. He was awarded “Most Outstanding Trial Advocate” at the American Trial Lawyers Association’s West Coast Regional Trial Championships. He completed his undergraduate studies at Brown University.
Throughout his career, Michael has been recognized for his legal excellence, including being named to the National Trial Lawyers’ “Top 40 Under 40,” the “Million Dollar Advocates Forum,” and “Lawyers of Distinction.”
